How To Support Your Adrenals
Our fast pace, always on the go lifestyle can often add extra stress to our daily routine, hence making it harder on our adrenal glands. Our adrenal glands are the small endocrine glands that sit on top of the kidneys. These glands are key players in initiating our “fight or flight” response as they synthesize hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline. The production of these hormones can suppress immunity, hinder proper digestion and increase both blood sugar and blood pressure. Over time, living in a constant state of “fight or flight” mode is not healthy for the body.
Supporting your adrenal glands is important for overall health and well-being, as these glands play a crucial role in regulating stress responses and maintaining various bodily functions. We may not be able to remove all forms of stress in life, but there are ways to support how the body adapts to it. Chronic stress can lead to adrenal dysfunction, which can take a significant toll on an individual’s health. Tips for naturally supporting your adrenals
Stress Management - Chronic stress can lead to adrenal fatigue. Practice stress reduction techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, journaling and deep breathing exercises.
Adequate Sleep - Ensure you get enough high-quality sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night, as sleep is essential for adrenal recovery.
Balanced Diet - Consume a balanced diet rich in nutrient-dense whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. Emphasize foods rich in nutrients that support adrenals, such as folate, magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc. Avoid excessive caffeine and sugar intake, as they can stress the adrenal glands.
Stay Hydrated - Dehydration can add to stress on the body. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain optimal hydration. Adding electrolytes or fresh squeezed lemon can be a great way to increase your water intake.
Regular Exercise - Engage in regular physical activity, but be mindful not to over-exercise, which can stress the adrenals. Choose activities that you enjoy and listen to your body.
Supplements - Some supplements, such as vitamin C, B vitamins and magnesium, may support adrenal function.
Adaptogenic Herbs - Certain herbs, such as ashwagandha, rhodiola and licorice root may help the body adapt to stress and support adrenal health.
Regular Meals - Eat regular, balanced meals and avoid skipping meals. Blood sugar stability is important for adrenal health.
Mind-Body Practices - Practices like yoga and walking can help reduce stress and promote overall well-being.
Avoid Toxins - Minimize exposure to environmental toxins and pollutants, as they can add stress to the body.
Limit Exposure to Blue Light - Reduce exposure to screens and artificial lighting, particularly in the evening, to support healthy circadian rhythms. Blue light blocking glasses are a great tool in helping reduce your exposure to blue light.
